DEBOPRIYO SARKAR (TABLA)
Debopriyo Sarkar is a talented young tabla
player from Kolkata. Born in Jalpuiguri,
North Bengal in 1971, Debopriyo has displayed
an enchanting love
of music since his early infant days. From
the age of two he began accompanying folk
and light vocal music with perfect rhythmic
sense. In these young years, before ever
learning the grammar of tabla, he was able
to capture the essence of the folk taals
such as dadra and keharwa.
Debopriyo was raised in an environment filled
with music and song. His grandmother used
to sing and was from a musical family very
well known of that time and she spread her
deep love of music throughout the household.
Both Bubai's mother and aunt have studied
sitar and continue to sing, and his sister
is a singer for All India Radio. Debopriyo
has grown up with this vibrant musical energy,
fostering in him a beautiful understanding
of melody and rhythm.
At the age of three, Debopriyo also began
to sing with an uncanny and delightful accuracy
of "sur". By the age of seven
he was requested to perform on many stages
throughout Jalpaiguri. He continued to perform
in many festivals until the age of ten,
when his love of tabla demanded his greater
attention. He then started taking formal
tabla lessons from a well-known Farukkhabad
exponent of Kolkata Shree Anil RoyChowdhury.
Debopriyo is a disciple of Pandit Anindo
Chatterjee. He has been performing since
1997 in the international arena, playing
many concerts in the U.S.A., Japan, India,
the Middle East, Europe and Canada. He has
played with many artists of high esteem:
Mashkoor Ali Khan, Nayan Ghosh, Rajeev Taranath,
Shujaat Khan, Tejendra Narayan Majumder,
Shafqat Ali Khan and others. He has had
the honor of performing "Tabla Lahara"
several times with this Guru in Kolkata,
the USA and Canada and taking part in Ustad
Alla Rakha's Birthday Memorial Concert for
in 2001. He has accompanied many artists
of high reknown, includingsome workshops
and classes of the Late Padmabhushan Pandit
Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan
and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Debopriyo has
worked with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's Music
Seminar at UC-Santa Cruz.
Debopriyo lives and teaches in the San Francisco
Bay Area and performs throughout the world.
He possesses an excellent temperament for
accompaniment with his clear, sweet tone
and intuitive melodic responses.
His
aesthetic balance between sensitive tonality
and rhythmic power creates moods of deep
and pure musical celebration. Debopriyo's
devoted and unique playing offers a new
and vibrant energy to the classical tradition
of Indian
Music.
